Stevens Decoys

Stevens Factory Decoys were made in Weedsport NY. The factory began its existence in the late 1860's by founders Harvey and George Stevens. This decoy company was the first known factory to advertise nationally in 1870 and continuing until about 1910.

The top two photos on this page are scans from the book "The Essential Guide To Stevens Decoys" by Shane Newell. The remainder of these images are actual photos I took myself from Stevens decoys that were in my personal collection.

Stevens decoys are easily recognized by their distinctive low profile, rounded form, specifically located drilled weight holes, and by the precise and unchanging bill carving detail.

Harvey Stevens' last decoys were produced around 1892. His carvings were noted by knowledgeable collectors for their precise balance in the water. Harvey Stevens was very particular about his work and often criticized other carvers of the period for their shoddy workmanship.

A great reference book on Stevens Decoys is: "The Essential Guide To Stevens Decoys" by Shane Newell, collector and author. Soft cover, 8.5 inch by 11 inch format, 90 pages, with over 60 color photos, 50 black & white pictures, diagrams and a species guide with a tally of species recorded.

Another good book is: "Factory Decoys of Mason, Stevens, Dodge and Peterson" by John & Shirley Delph. Hardcover. A section on Stevens Decoys covers the early history of this company.

Growing up on Fox Island near Cape Vincent, and coming from a family of avid duck hunters, I personally used many of Stevens gunning decoys for practical hunting purposes. It's hard to believe that only 45 - 50 years ago, we were hunting over these very decoys that now command upwards of $1,000 each in collectible value!
