Dick Porter was a self-taught carver and a talented artist. He held a school for aspiring carvers in the basement of his home in Stratford, CT for many years. He carved only for the love of his work, often realizing only $.50 to $1.00 per hour for his labor. In 1996 he developed hand problems and stopped carving and closed his school.

Richard Porter made many of his decoys hollow as a matter of choice. This Shovelhead Drake is a prime example of the time consuming and dedicated intricacy that is reflected in his work.
