Billy
Ellis (1865-1963) Whitby, Ontario, was well
known in the sports of trapshooting and duck hunting. Recognized
and respected world-wide as a talented carver of decoys.
His
trademark is his unusual bill carving detail, with pronounced
raised edges between the smooth bill and the head, instead
of the groove used by most carvers (see 3rd photo from bottom
of page).
This
is an oversized 'tucked head' Bluebill Drake decoy.
Carved from solid wood and painted by Billy during the later
years in his career.
Early
1950's in vintage. Measures
15-1/2" long from bill to tail feathers and 6-1/2" wide
at its widest point across the bottom.
Near
mint condition in all original paint - no touch up! The intricate
combwork is quite remarkable.
